Elder, Deputy President, Egi Peoples Assembly (EPA)

Elder Oji (FCAI) is the second elected Deputy President of the Egi People’s Assembly (EPA). EPA is a Community Based Organisation aimed at promoting economic development and good governance in the Egi community. It has a mission to promote peace and unity among Egi people of Rivers State, Nigeria and create an enabling environment for collective prosperity and a sustainable Egi City. Egi is the principal host community of Total’s oil and gas asset in the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 58 onshore Niger Delta. Elder Oji, who is presently Acting President of the Assembly is a retired education administrator experienced in public and private sectors.

What can you tell us about yourself? Any interests or hobbies?

I am a versatile graduate of agriculture and accountancy, devoted to service of my Community. Before being elected as an EPA Executive, I was the Public Relations Officer of the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Obiyebe Community since 1998. I am also involved as chapter President of Full Gospel Business Men’s fellowship, as an elder in my church I love evangelising. I also like to jog, read, write and sing.

Can you describe the relationship between Total and Egi communities?

EPA ensures that a cordial relationship exists between Total and Egi institutions. EPA is a rallying point of Egi institutions namely, Egi Youth Federation (EYF), Egi Women Welfare Association (EWWA), Egi Oil and Gas Producing Families, the Council of Chiefs, OML58 Consultative Forum and the MoU Steering Committee. At EPA we address critical issues with our stakeholders such as employment, MoU implementation, Security, Community empowerment and so on. So far Egi people have worked in harmony with Total through initiatives driven by EPA.

In what ways has the EPA facilitated the cordial relationship between Total and Egi communities?

EPA’s strategy has been the setting up of organs like the Egi Chamber of Commerce to fast-track economic growth and the Egi City Development Initiative and Programme for the overall development of Egi communities. Over the years we have developed a consciousness among our people to discourage them from abandoning development projects. We monitor MoU projects while Total does their monitoring. Peace in Egi is made possible through these initiatives.

What evidence can you provide in the form of Programmes that demonstrate Total’s commitment to the development of Egiland?

Some of the programmes Total has executed include provision of water, electricity, skills development, scholarships, health initiatives, and enlightenment campaigns. The capacity building for teachers and Corps members have reduced agitations from our people and saved lives. Not many companies provide these for their host communities.

We ensure that a cordial relationship exists between Total and Egi institutions.
