The attention of the management of Total Nigeria Plc has been drawn to some media reports on leakage of petrol within the neighbourhood of our Filling Station in Akoka area of Lagos.

Total Nigeria Plc wishes to give an accurate account of events:

On the 13th of August 2017, the station Dealer notified the Akoka Community Development Association (CDA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Divisional Police Officer in Bariga Police station of a suspected leak, and the community was immediately advised to desist from using the water wells. Subsequently, the Dealer has been providing water to the affected members of the community.   

After due assessment by LASEPA, an approved clean-up and remediation plan was implemented under close supervision of LASEPA.

A post remediation test conducted by LASEPA on the 29th December 2017 revealed that the underground water in the impacted area had been restored to its original status of potability and the Akoka Service Station received a clean bill of health, dated 8th January 2018 from LASEPA. A confirmatory test carried out on the 6th of February 2018 affirmed the earlier results.

Stakeholder meetings (which included the community) were convened by Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and LASEPA on different occasions where palliatives measures were agreed and duly implemented.

Notwithstanding the aforementioned, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment ordered the closure of the station on Friday, 22nd of June 2018.

As a good corporate citizen, Total Nigeria Plc will continue to work with the regulators and all stakeholders to resolve this matter.
