TotalEnergies boosts Nigeria’s fight against breast cancer with mammography centre donation

In a bid to boost Nigeria’s fight against breast cancer, TotalEnergies, in collaboration with partners including Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130, has donated a fully equipped mammography centre to the Adamawa State Government.

Situated in Garkida General Hospital in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria’s North-East region, the new health facility was inaugurated on September 19, 2024, as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.

The centre was donated to provide improved access to quality healthcare and reduce the fatality rate associated with breast cancer, which kills over 14,000 women in Nigeria annually, according to a 2020 report by the Global Cancer Observatory.

Managing Director of TotalEnergies, Mr Matthieu Bouyer, whose goodwill message was read during the inauguration of the new facility by Acting General Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs Tonye Osifo, disclosed that the new mammography centre will provide access to affordable early diagnosis and detection and aid in the prompt treatment and follow-up of patients, saving thousands of lives in the process.

Describing the donated health facility as a symbol of hope for women at risk of breast cancer across the country, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NNPC Limited Upstream Investment Management Services Limited, Mr Bala Wunti, added that they’ll continue to partner with TotalEnergies and other stakeholders to provide quality healthcare for Nigerians.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that TotalEnergies is playing a leading role in Nigeria’s fight against breast cancer—since 2019, the company, alongside its partners, has donated eight other fully equipped mammography centres to communities across the country as part of its corporate social responsibility commitment to the people.
